Otago University Clock Tower

Size 150mm high

The University of Otago, New Zealand’s first University, was established by ordinance of the Otago Provincial Council in June 1869. The first University building proved to be unsuited for the purpose and the University Council called for competitive designs for a new building on the site where the University stands today.

From the five plans submitted, the University Council chose the design of Maxwell Bury who had submitted his design under the code name “To B or not to B”. E. J. McCoy, writing in 1968, noted that Bury’s plan showed the influence of Sir George Gilbert Scott’s Glasgow University design, completed in 1870.

It was decided to build substantially in stone because, as the chancellor, the Reverend Dr D. M. Stuart remarked, “the Council had some old world notions and liked to have a University with some architectural style”. Readily available building materials such as Leith Valley andesite and Port Chalmers bluestone, combined with white Oamaru stone were used to create its handsome vernacular façade.

This miniature is available at a specially discounted price of $199 to all students who produce their student ID when ordering this miniature. In addition, the miniature ordered will have the date of year when ordered added, or alternatively, the date of graduation if this is advised to us when placing the order.
