Mitchells CottageSize 40mm high Born in the Shetland Islands in 1832 and a carpenter by trade, John Mitchell was lured to New Zealand by the Central Otago Goldrush. He landed at Hokitika in 1872 then walked to Otago over the Haast Pass.
John worked throughout Central Otago where he met and later married Jessie Casper in 1882.
John and Jessie Mitchell arrived with their eldest child at Bald Hill Flat in 1884 where they built a stone cottage and raised a family of ten children. The cottage design is simple with two large rooms and three smaller ones including the kitchen and the two chimneys. Practically no mortar was used during its construction and the stonework survives in good condition. John Mitchell died in 1922 aged 90 years. Jessie died three years later. After her death the rest of the family left the district. The cottage was empty for many years before being acquired by the Department of Lands and Survey in 1980. Price $69.00*
