St Dunstan’s Church, ClydeSize 75mm high Much of the small Central Otago township of Clyde, along with its church, was destroyed by a terrible storm in 1869. Parishioners of the time were forced to attend Mass in an old stone School.
That would not be the end of Clyde or its church. 34 years later, on Sunday 18th October 1903, St Dunstan’s Church was opened in honour of St Dunstan, Archbishop of Canterbury (909-988AD).
Styled from stone with a Marseilles tile roof by architect Sir Francis William Petrie, St Dunstan’s church depicts an English Gothic Revival.
The wooden interior that is made entirely of kauri has survived over 100 years and the small organ is said to be over 150 years old.
When I arrived in Clyde to capture the memory of St Dunstan’s in miniature, I was immediately struck by the simple beauty of the building and the feelings of love and happiness that seem to radiate from inside.
St Dunstan’s Church is a treasure, a tribute to faith and the memory of young couples who began a lifetime together encapsulated by the light from its stained glass windows.
You can still hear the organ play throughout Clyde to this day, as the Church celebrates another wedding in the idyllic surroundings of roses and flowering cherry trees. Price $89.00*
