Larnach Castle

William J M Larnach was the manager of the Bank of Otago and a leading Dunedin businessman. He later became an important political figure in New Zealand responsible for bringing in overseas experts to mechanize the gold industry.
These were golden times for some, where men like William J M Larnach prospered. Larnach aspired to build a magnificent castle looking out over the Otago Peninsula. The finest local and overseas craftsmen used styles and materials from all over the world to create his grand dream, sparing no expense.
Larnach’s home is surrounded by delicate cast iron lace work on the verandahs as was the fashion in Australia at the time. This blending of styles from the old world and the colonies made Larnach Castle an iconic building.
The castle’s foundation stone was laid in August 1871 although much of the castle was built between 1873 and 1876. Larnach Castle is the only stone house in Victorian Scottish baronial style in New Zealand. The family was able to move into the castle in 1874, where they lived until it was sold to the government in 1907.
The castle was the centerpiece of Larnach’s peninsula kingdom which consisted of 46 servants, 35 acres of grounds, and 300 acres of farmland. It has 34 rooms covering 43200 square feet.
When you’re standing on the castle walls, looking out over the Otago Peninsula, the views are breathtaking. Truly William J M Larnach must have only resigned to such a grand undertaking in an effort to match the beauty of his surroundings. Perched atop the mountains of the Otago Peninsula, Larnach Castle seems to rise into the heavens. It is without doubt a grand monument to Otago’s rich gold mining history.
