Church of the Good ShepherdSize 70mm high Set against the stunning surrounds of Lake Tekapo, the Church of the Good Shepherd is a fitting memorial to the original settlers of the area. Local runholders saw the building of the church as an opportunity to celebrate the glory of God, and to commemorate their ancestors who bravely fought against the challenges of the harsh alpine environment to establish their home.
The church, which was first built in the Mackenzie Basin, was designed by architect R.S.D. Harman (1896-1953), based on drawings by Esther Hope (1885-1975).
The economic depression of the thirties meant the community had to build the face of the church using local stone in its original state complete with lichen. “Oak Shingles”, used for the roof, did not stand up to the extreme weather conditions of New Zealand and had to be replaced with slate in 1957.
The church was opened in 1935. Today it seems to timelessly merge with its surroundings; complimenting the spectacular landscape and reminding us of the endurance, stability and strength of the early New Zealand Pioneers.
Upon entering the Church of the Good Shepherd you are immediately struck by the majestic view of the lake and mountains, visible through the plate glass window above the alter which frames the glory of God’s creation. Price $99.00*
